Frequently Asked Questions
Zodiac holds are designed with the shapes climbers actually train on in gyms, not what manufacturers assume they want. We focus on repeatable, consistent geometry across sets so your finger stimulus stays intentional across sessions. Most holds are made with a sharper edge profile than mainstream brands, which trains recruitment more directly. We don't add unnecessary drama to the sculpting.
Edge depth depends on your training phase and goal. The 20mm edge is the most versatile—usable for strength endurance, load phases, and most training cycles. Shallower edges (16mm, 18mm) demand more finger flexor recruitment and are for climbers building raw crimp strength. Deeper edges (22mm, 24mm) are easier on tendons and better for warm-ups or recovery phases. The 12mm is for advanced climbers chasing maximal recruitment. Most climbers start with 20mm and add other depths as their training evolves. See our complete guide to choosing the right training edge.
You need a clear signal. If you're training strength, that signal is load—can you add 10lbs this cycle? If it's endurance, the signal is reps at a fixed load. If you don't measure it, you don't know if the hold worked or if you just got stronger anyway. Most climbers pick a protocol (repeaters, hangs, campus pull-ups, etc.), pick a load or reps, and test every 4 weeks.

For the longest time majority of hangboards and finger edges were 20mm deep. That is the standard but, it's also an arbitrary value with no human connection. Climbers now know it's best to train on a variety of edge depths and types for diversity load in stimulus. That's why we offer our No Hang Edges in Unlevel, 24mm, 22mm, 20mm, 18mm, 16mm and 12mm.
With hands size being such a variable, we suggest measuring from the tip of the index to the base of the wrist in inches to determine your size:
- Less than 7 inches = Small
- 7in to 7.5in = Medium
- Greater than 7.5inch = Large

All of our hand holds and foot holds are best attached with T25 outdoor wood screws. You can use deck screws found at lumber stores as long they are #10. We list the length of screws needed with each hold. If you just need a couple of screws we do sell them if you absolutely need them.
Make sure you do not over tighten.
Our holds feel like a mix of old gym holds and hardwood climbing holds. Every hold we make is "dual textured" meaning expect our fine texture on the grip surface and nowhere else. These will get better with age and use. It will absorb chalk and sweat and have a nice patina over time (like wood). Unlike new commercial holds you do not need to sand them down. Our texture is perfect from the start.
It is better to keep these indoors. Also take note if your attic or garage gets hotter than 160F these holds will not perform as designed.
We do not recommend our products for outdoor use and you are probably better with standard PU holds as they will resist heat until 200F.
