The problem

The current climbing market is saturated with increasingly expensive training tools. From edges to hangboards down to portable dynamometer/force measuring bluetooth devices.

Not everyone can have plate weights for no hangs or have a place to mount a hangboard so having a system that is low impact to your living situation is key.

A solution

Opening up an option to allow anyone to train at home with all/any of our corded training tools. We sought out an inexpensive solution for an at home low equipment training setup.

Not everyone can store massive amounts of weights or mount a hangboard where they live. So, we were really excited to learn about the WH-C06 which is a sub $25 force gauge. Given that the current cost of a "climbing" specific load device is between $160 to $250.

Combine the WH-C06 with any of our corded training tools you can do really comprehensive isometric grip training in conjunction to the Frez app.

What it takes?

We have compiled a list of the most cost effective low impact training setup. If you went in on all the things below you would spend less than $50.

  • WH-C06 Scale on Aliexpress. We got ours for $20 with a new user coupon also took around 20 days to arrive.
  • 2 carabiners. Use what you have but, if you need some we have found these the cheapest but, quality ones on Amazon for around $9 for 2. The scale comes with some attachments but they are really bulky.
  • Static connective material. A piece of static rope, cord or webbing. Again use what you have but what you really want is around 12" to 14" length. We found a $9 prusik that works well or a $9 sling on Amazon. Another option is a lashing strap also found on amazon for $6.
  • Lastly what I like to call "The Stick" is a 2ft piece of 5/8" round hardwood dowel. Most hardware stores like Home Depot or Lowes have this for a few bucks. Make sure its hardwood and round.
  • If you care about visuals and are mechanically inclined you can swap out the case for a slim version. We offer them here and provide install guides.
  • Finally the magic is the Frez app. Previously known as ClimbHarder this app connects to the WH-C06 and has all the standard training protocols and features. The app is being continually enhanced and we have been using it for a few months and love it.

Notes:

  • One con we have noticed is comparing the Tindeq to the generic WH-C06 the speed of data transfer via Bluetooth is a little laggy not a huge deal for training only affecting rate of force testing.
  • There are numerous places to learn about isommetric finger training routines a good resource is C4HP "Finger Strength Training 4 Rock Climbing".
