Most "wrist training for climbers" content stops at curls and reverse curls. That is half the joint. The wrist and forearm also rotate: pronation (palm down) and supination (palm up). Climbing loads those actions constantly: opposing holds, compression, matching on weird angles, saving a swing when the shoulder wants to dump. If your stack never trains rotation, you are polishing two directions and ignoring the third plane.
This is training content, not a diagnosis guide. Elbow pain has many causes. Do not treat a blog post like a clinician. Do treat rotational strength like a legitimate part of forearm resilience and performance.
Where rotation shows up on the wall
- Compression: hands facing each other, body tension through the forearms, constant micro-adjustments in rotation.
- Sidepulls and gastron-ish shapes: the forearm does not stay in a pure flex/extend world.
- Underclings and matches: supination demands appear when the palm has to face you under load.
- Stabilizing bad holds: the ugly save often includes a rotational isometric you never trained in the gym.
You can develop some of this "for free" by climbing. Structured loading fills holes climbing leaves, especially if your sessions are crimp-heavy on plastic that never forces true compression.
The tool: Wrist Pronator
The Wrist Pronator exists to load rotation without turning every set into a cable-machine project. Keep the elbow relatively stable, move through controlled pronation and supination, and progress load the same way you would any strength exercise: clean reps first, weight second.
If you only own a Wrist Wrench, you can still bias some patterns depending on setup, but a dedicated pronator makes rotation the job instead of an afterthought bolted onto flex work.
A simple pronation session
- Warmeasy rotation
- Work3–4 × controlled sets
- Temposlow both ways
- Stopsharp elbow pain
Frequency: 1–2× per week.
- Warm the elbow and wrist with easy circles and light grip.
- Pronation: 3 sets of 6–10 slow, controlled reps. Pause lightly in the hard range if stable.
- Supination: 3 sets of 6–10, same standard.
- Optional: 2 × 5–8s isometric holds mid-range if isometrics agree with you.
Rest 90–120 seconds between sets. This is not a race to a pump. If load forces the shoulder to hitch or the elbow to flare wildly, you went too heavy.
"Elbow-friendly" training habits (not medical claims)
Climbers often stack high pull volume, aggressive crimping, and zero antagonist or rotational work. A saner pattern:
- Keep rotational work submax and consistent rather than rare and heroic.
- Avoid adding brand-new heavy pronation the same week you peak min-edge and project every day.
- Pair with extension work (wrench or roller reverse bias) so you are not only loading the flexor-pronator story.
- If pain is sharp, persistent, or worsening, stop loading and get a professional assessment. Training blogs are not clinicians.
Where it sits in the week
- After finger strength, or on a separate short forearm day.
- Beside wrench flexion/extension as part of a wrist stack, not instead of all other wrist work forever.
- As a 10-minute add-on that actually happens, not a 40-minute specialty session you skip.

The point
Rotation is not exotic. It is missing. Add pronation and supination the same way you added hangboarding: light structure, repeatable loads, enough weeks to matter. Your compression problems will notice before your Instagram does. That is fine.
