To overload the fingers, you have two main levers. Keep the edge comfortable and add weight (heavy loads, or max hangs). Or keep bodyweight and shrink the edge until a small edge alone is the challenge (minimal edge). Both make the hang harder. Coaches have argued for years about which builds strength better.

The case for heavy loads on a comfortable edge
You hang a standard edge, usually around 20mm, and add weight via a belt or loading pin, or run the no-hang version: a block lift off the ground with the load on a pin. The edge is deep enough to spare skin and joints, and the difficulty comes from the load. The hangboard research base supports added-weight max hangs as an effective route to maximal finger strength.
Advantages: it's measurable (last cycle +20kg, this cycle +25kg), the comfortable edge is easier on skin and the DIP joint, and the loading is easy to progress in small steps. The catch is that recruitment training has a ceiling. Once you've maxed your ability to recruit on that edge, piling on more weight mostly adds connective-tissue stress without adding strength. A lot of climbers get stuck here and keep loading heavier, thinking the protocol quit working when really they've gotten everything out of it.
The case for the minimal edge
You stay at or near bodyweight and make the edge smaller. The stimulus comes from the tiny contact area. This trains the fingers in a position much closer to the small holds you actually crimp on rock, and it builds familiarity with shallow edges that added-weight-on-a-big-edge training doesn't.
Advantages: high specificity to small-edge climbing, and no need for a pile of plates or a pulley. The catch is skin and joints. Tiny edges concentrate pressure on the fingertip and load the DIP joint harder, so the injury and skin cost is higher, and it's easy to overreach. It's also harder to progress cleanly, since edge depth doesn't come in neat increments the way weight plates do.
20mm is the usual “comfortable” reference for heavy-load work. Minimal-edge work walks left on this scale: same body, harder geometry. Change load or depth in a block; rarely both in the same week.

What the research suggests
The literature on hangboard intensity is clear that high-intensity finger loading builds strength, whether you get the intensity from load or from edge depth. Devise et al. (2022) manipulated intensity on a fixed 12mm edge and saw strength gains scale with intensity. Hermans et al. (2022) showed structured hangboard training beat unstructured climbing for finger strength regardless of the exact overload method. The mechanism that matters is sufficient intensity applied consistently. Both roads deliver it.
On a fixed edge, strength gains scaled with intensity: how hard you load matters more than which lever you pull.
So pick the overload you can progress cleanly for months, not the one that sounds harder on paper.
What the research doesn't hand you is a clean winner, because the studies vary in design, population, and method, which makes direct comparison hard. So the decision comes down to context, not a verdict.
