You warm up, get on the board, and the crimps feel fine. Then the problem turns to slopers and you start coming off holds you should stay on. Same session, same skin, same fingers that hit a respectable number on the hangboard last week. On edges that number shows up for you. On slopers it apparently stays home.
The usual response is to blame friction, then conditions, then to go train fingers harder. But there is a joint between your fingers and your forearm, and on a sloper it is doing a job that nothing else in your training week prepares it for.
On a sloper, your fingers make the force. Your wrist decides whether it reaches the hold.
What a sloper actually asks of your wrist
An open-hand grip on a rounded hold puts the wrist in extension while the fingers pull hard, and the structures on the back of the wrist take the brunt. That is the position slopers live in: fingers draped, palm angled into the hold, wrist bent back and holding everything together while you move off it.
It's also why climbers who put in a lot of board and volume time tend to collect a vague, nagging ache on top of the wrist that is worse the day after a session. Why the extension side is empty
Climbers are usually flexion-dominant already. Every hold you grip, every lock-off, every curl-shaped thing you have ever done in a gym trains the palm side of the forearm. The extension side gets loaded when you climb slopers and roughly never otherwise, and skipping it is one of the most common gaps in how climbers train wrists.
So the strength imbalance is not a personal failing, it's the default outcome of doing the sport. The catch is that wrist tissue adapts slowly. A week of extension work before your next board session won't change anything. A couple of months of consistent, low-dose work is a different story.

None of this is a diagnosis. It's a pattern, and patterns are cheap to test: give the extension side a few weeks of deliberate work and see whether slopers start feeling like holds you can stay on.
Training the direction climbing skips
The simplest entry point is extension-biased roller work. A wrist roller trains flexion and extension under a continuous grip demand, and the reverse-bias direction, where the load challenges extension, is usually the undertrained one. If you only have time for one bias, that's the one to prioritize. Be honest about what this buys you. Extension work won't turn slopers into jugs, and it won't replace time actually climbing on them. What it changes is which link gives out first: whether a long sloper session ends because you ran out of strength or because your wrist quietly stopped cooperating somewhere in the middle.
Fingers get the attention because fingers are the obvious limiter. But if your finger strength is real and slopers still feel insecure, stop retesting the part that already works. Test the joint behind it.
