Flat training edges are honest in one way and dishonest in another. They give you a known depth. They also let you settle, smear, and use skin friction in ways that hide weak links, especially the deep finger flexor demand of a true claw. A rolling edge fights that settle. If you do not stay active through the grip, the edge rotates and the set ends.

What you are training
Call it claw, call it active FDP bias, call it "the grip that does not let you hang out." Practically:
- Fingers stay more engaged through the set; passive hanging is punished.
- You cannot rely on the same friction strategies that work on a static flat edge.
- Loads will often be lower than your flat-edge max for the same depth. That is expected, not a failure.
RXE work is a supplement to flat-edge strength, not a full replacement. Keep a normal measurable lift or hang on a static edge as your benchmark. Use rolling work to close a gap flat edges under-train.
22RXE vs 28RXE

Start on 28 unless you already train small edges well and know your skin recovers. Jumping straight to 22 because it looks harder is a classic way to train your ego and your flappers, not your fingers.
Protocol A — Strength bias (default)
- Setupactive claw through the roll
- Workshort hard sets
- Restfull
- Stopform collapse or sharp pain
Frequency: 1–2× per week, not on top of a maximal flat-edge day if both leave you wrecked.
- Warm up on jugs or easy flat lifts until skin and joints feel ready.
- 2–3 ramp sets on the RXE at light load, focusing on quiet shoulders and active fingers.
- Work: 4–6 sets of 5–8 second lifts (or hangs if mounted in a way that keeps the roll honest).
- Rest 2–3 minutes between work sets.
- Stop the session if the roll becomes a fight against form collapse rather than a clean challenge.
Load selection: choose a weight you can hold with clear finger tension for the full window. If the edge constantly dumps because you went too heavy, you are training panic, not claw strength. Drop load, own the position, then build.
Protocol B — Density (advanced, short blocks only)
After you can complete Protocol A cleanly for two weeks:
- 3–4 sets of 4–5 reps: 5s on / 5s off, same load, full rest between sets (2–3 min).
- Keep total density work brief. Rolling edges punish volume faster than flat edges for many climbers.
Do not run density RXE in the same microcycle as a high-volume board phase and a min-edge peak. Pick expensive stimuli.
Progression
- Week-to-week: add the smallest plate that preserves clean 5–8s holds.
- Depth progression: own 28 before living on 22.
- Not progression: longer and longer grindy holds that turn into skin endurance. If holds creep past ~10–12s, raise load or end the set.
Skin, elbows, and stop signs
Rolling demand can light up skin and the anterior elbow chain. That does not mean "push through."
- Keep sessions short when skin is thin.
- If medial or lateral elbow irritation shows up, cut RXE volume first and check wrist support work. Not every problem is fixed by more clawing.
- Sharp finger pain is a stop, not a badge.
Where RXE sits in a week
Example strength week:
- Day 1: flat-edge max lifts (your numbers day).
- Day 2 or 3: RXE claw protocol (quality, lower absolute load).
- Other days: climbing, easy volume, or rest. No third max finger day "just because."
