Climbing is a pulling sport almost to the exclusion of pushing. You pull into holds, pull your body up, lock off. You almost never press anything away from you. Over months and years that one-sided loading pattern builds a real imbalance: strong lats and forearms, comparatively weak chest, triceps, and the muscles that stabilize the front of the shoulder. Coaches and climbing physios broadly agree that climbing's repetitive pulling can leave the opposing "push" muscles underdeveloped, and that this imbalance is associated with the shoulder and elbow complaints climbers know well. The logic is straightforward: muscles work in pairs, and if one side of a joint gets trained hard thousands of times while the other side barely works, the joint loses balanced support. The usual prescription is antagonist training, deliberately working the pushing and external-rotation muscles that climbing neglects.
Worth being honest here: this is well-established coaching practice and it makes good mechanical sense, but the hard experimental evidence that antagonist training prevents climbing injuries is thinner than the confident advice you'll read online. Treat it as sensible insurance, not a guarantee. It's cheap, it's low-risk, and the mechanism is plausible. That's enough reason to do a little. It's not reason to build your whole program around it.
What parallettes actually do
Parallettes are two small parallel bars you push off the floor. They let you train pushing patterns with your wrists in a neutral position, which is easier on the wrists than flat-hand push-ups for a lot of people. The main things they train:
- Pushing strength: push-ups, dips, and their progressions load the chest, triceps, and front delts, the direct antagonists to climbing's pull

The parallettes' real edge is the neutral wrist and the portability. For a climber who already has cranky wrists from crimping, being able to press without forcing the wrist into extension is worth a lot.
How much is enough

Not much. Antagonist work is supplemental, and treating it like a bodybuilding chest day is a waste of recovery you'd rather spend on fingers and climbing. Two or three sets of a pushing movement, twice a week, covers most of the benefit.
The honest limits
Parallettes won't make you climb harder in any direct way. Pushing strength isn't a climbing demand. What antagonist work plausibly does is keep you healthy enough to keep training the things that do make you climb harder, and that's the entire pitch. If your shoulders and elbows feel fine and you're not accumulating overuse niggles, the urgency is low. If you're a high-volume climber with a history of shoulder or elbow trouble, the case is much stronger. Match the effort to your actual risk, not to a blanket rule.
The bottom line
Climbing pulls and rarely pushes, and over time that imbalance shows up in the shoulders and elbows.
