The Honest Case for (and Against) a Finger-Strength Dynamometer

Finger-strength measurement split into two camps. On one side, weight plates and a loading pin: cheap, simple, and you probably already own the plates. On the other, a digital strain gauge or dynamometer: precise to the gram, app-connected, and pricier. The question isn't which is more accurate. It's whether the extra precision changes what you do.

For a lot of climbers, it doesn't. For some, it genuinely does. Here's how to tell which you are.

What each one actually gives you

Weight plates + loading pin

You lift a known load off the ground. Either it comes up or it doesn't. Your number is the heaviest weight you can hold for your test duration, in whatever increment your plates allow. Cheap, reliable, and honest, since you can't fudge a plate that stays on the floor. The limit is resolution: if your smallest plate is 2.5kg, you can only measure in 2.5kg steps.

Digital strain gauge / dynamometer

You pull against a fixed sensor and it reads your force continuously, often to the gram, usually into an app. You get peak force, rate of force development, force curves over time, and left-right comparisons. It also removes the awkwardness of loading heavy plates for strong fingers. The catch is cost, and the fact that all that data is only useful if you use it.

Where the gauge earns its money

  • You track rate of force development. Plates can't measure how fast you build force, only whether you held the load. RFD matters for explosive climbing, and a gauge is the only practical way to see it.
  • You want precise, granular progression. If 2.5kg jumps are too coarse for the changes you're chasing, gram-level resolution lets you see small gains and manage load carefully. Useful in rehab especially.
  • You care about left-right asymmetry. A gauge shows imbalances between hands that plates hide.
  • Strong fingers, awkward loads. Once you're lifting a lot, stacking plates gets clumsy. A gauge with a light rig is cleaner.

Where plates are plenty

  • You do max hangs and lifts and just want to know if the number went up.
  • You already own plates and a pin.
  • You're not going to open an app and analyze force curves. Be honest here. Most people won't.
  • You value simplicity and one less thing to charge and sync.

The honest bottom line

A strain gauge is a better measuring tool. That's not in question. What's in question is whether you'll act on the extra data, because a number you don't use is just a more expensive number. If you're a data-driven climber who'll actually track RFD and asymmetry and precise progression, the gauge pays for itself. If you mostly want to see your max hang creep up over a cycle, plates do that for free.
