A ball lift is exactly what it sounds like. You grip a sphere with an open hand, thumb and fingers spread around the curve, and lift weight off the ground. Grip sport athletes have done versions of this for years with cannonball-style implements and loading pins. The Icarus-style bucket and ball lifts are the same idea: round surface, no edge, pure friction and finger tension.

What makes a ball lift different from an edge?
On an edge, you get a lip. Your fingers hook over it and the bone structure does some of the work. On a ball, there's nothing to hook. The surface curves away from your fingertips, so the only thing keeping the weight in your hand is friction and how hard you can drive your fingers into the curve.
That's the open-hand grip in its purest form. It loads the finger flexors in a more extended position than a crimp, and it demands the kind of active pressing you need on slopers and rounded pockets.

Why bother, if you can just climb slopers?
Fair question. Climbing slopers is specific and you should do it. The catch is that slopers on the wall are hard to load progressively. You can't add 5kg to a gym sloper. With a ball lift, you can. You get measurable, repeatable open-hand loading that you can track week to week, which is hard to get any other way.
It also isolates. On the wall, a bad sloper move is often a body-tension problem as much as a grip problem. The ball lift strips that away and asks one question: how hard can your open hand press? If the answer is "not very," you've found something to work on.

Two sessions a week fits most programs. The open-hand grip tends to recover well, so you can pair it with edge work on the same day if you keep the volume sensible.
The honest limitation
A ball lift builds the grip, not the movement. Actual sloper climbing asks you to keep body tension, manage feet, and trust friction while moving. The lift won't teach any of that. It builds the raw open-hand capacity that makes those moves possible, and then climbing has to do the rest.
