There's a rule that circulates in every gym: don't start hangboarding until you climb around V4 (or 5.11-ish). The logic is that below that level, you'll get stronger just by climbing, and your fingers aren't ready for concentrated load. Lately some coaches have started poking holes in it. Both sides have a point, and the number itself was always a rough proxy for the thing that actually matters.
The case for the V4 rule
It's not arbitrary. A few reasons it's stuck around:
- Newer climbers get strong from climbing alone. The finger-strength research keeps showing that structured hangboarding beats unstructured climbing for intermediate to advanced climbers, partly because those climbers have stopped getting easy gains from climbing itself. A beginner still improving fast from just climbing doesn't need to add concentrated finger load to progress.
- Tissue readiness. The finger pulleys, tendons, and bone adapt to load over months and years, and they adapt slower than your muscles and nervous system. A climber early in their training age hasn't accumulated that tissue adaptation yet, so piling on maximal finger load is a plausible injury risk.
- Skill first. Early climbing gains should come from movement, footwork, and body awareness. Time spent hangboarding is time not spent building the skills that matter most early on.
The case against it
The pushback is mostly about how the rule gets applied:
- Grade is a bad proxy for training age. Someone can flail up V4 on power and terrible technique, or climb V3 with beautiful movement and two solid years under their belt. The grade doesn't tell you whether the tissue is ready. Time climbing and consistency of load matter more than the number.
- Low-intensity finger work is safe earlier. The blanket "no hangboarding" advice usually pictures heavy max hangs. Low-intensity, high-frequency protocols like Abrahangs are gentle enough that Gilmore et al. (2024) built strength with them at loads far below max. Light, controlled finger loading isn't the same risk as maxing out, and can reasonably start earlier.
- Some early structure prevents bad habits. A little guided finger loading can teach good positions and gradual progression before someone develops a habit of yanking on holds with no plan.

The refereed answer
The grade was never the real point. Tissue readiness is.
The V4 rule is a decent rule of thumb wearing a misleading number. What it's really trying to say is: don't load your fingers hard before your tissue has had time to adapt and before you've stopped getting easy gains from climbing. That's sound. The grade is just a rough stand-in for training age and tissue readiness.
A reasonable position:
- If you've been climbing under a year and still improving quickly, spend your energy on movement and volume. You don't need dedicated hangboarding yet.
- Light, low-intensity finger work (think easy edge holds, not maximal hangs) can reasonably start earlier, especially if introduced gradually and kept sub-maximal.
- Save heavy max hangs and minimal-edge work for when you have a real training-age base and a few injury-free years of load behind you, roughly the point most people reach around the V4-to-V5 range anyway.
- If you have any finger injury history, be more conservative regardless of grade.
So the number isn't wrong so much as incomplete. Use it as a prompt to ask the better questions: how long have I been climbing, is climbing alone still working, and am I about to load harder than my tendons are ready for?
